Prepare don't swear: Time is now to know you have essentials in place for next storm

It's a good idea to hang on to your emergency supplies for the next storm.

The recent winter storm was devastating to many who lost electricity and shivered in the cold. Icy roads also created all sorts of travel issues.

Some people fared much better than others and didn't get much ice, and as a result, their power stayed on.

If you bought a generator and other emergency items hang on to them. It's also a good reminder to review your items to see what could be lacking.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) urges you to keep emergency kits in a place accessible to the entire family.

Retired Emergency Preparedness Director James Judge says preparation is important.

"What have you done to get ready?  Have you gotten a preparedness plan? Have you discussed it with your family? Do you need to evacuate? If you need to evacuate, where are you going to go? Have a plan, stay informed, get a kit because all of those things are vital to maintaining your safety."

In addition to an emergency kit, it's also a good idea to make a checklist of needed items and actions to take, so when another storm threatens, you know what to do.  Just remember where you put the list!
