At stake in 2022 Midterms

  • 35 seats in U.S. Senate
    (36 Democrats, 29 Republicans unchanged) -- net gain of 1 seat will give GOP majority
  • All 435 seats in U.S. House of Representatives (Currently 220 Democrat, 2 Independents, 212 Republican, 1 vacant) -- net gain of 5 seats will give GOP majority
  • 36 governors' seats

GOP, Democrats notch victories in competitive midterm races

Oregon's gubernatorial race is close: Democrat Tina Kotek is leading Christine Drazan 45%-44%. About 55% of votes have been counted and 860,000 remain. 

Republican Ted Budd is the projected winner in the Senate race in North Carolina, besting Democrat Cheri Beasley.

NBC News: New York Gov. Kathy Hochul is the projected winner in her race with GOP Rep. Lee Zeldin. 

Update: In Arizona race for governor, Democrat Katie Hobbs is leading Kari Lake 56%-43% with about 51% of votes counted. About 1.2 million votes remain. 

Georgia's Republican governor, Brian Kemp, is projected to defeat Democrat Stacey Abrams to win re-election. 

Projected winner in the high-profile Senate race in Ohio is the GOP's J.D. Vance, defeating Democratic Congressman Tim Ryan.

NBC News projections: Republican Eric Schmitt is the projected winner in the Senate race in Missouri -- and Democratic incumbent Maggie Hassan defeats Republican challenger Don Bolduc.

GOP HOUSE PICK-UP ... Fox News has projected the winner in Virginia's 2nd Congressional District: Republican Jennifer Kiggans, defeating Democratic incumbent Elaine Luria.

Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham, New Mexico's governor, is projected winner in that race per NBC News.  

NBC News: Democrat Josh Shapiro is projected to win Pennsylvania's governor's race, defeating GOP candidate Doug Mastriano. 

In the hotly contested 7th District in Virginia, Democratic incumbent Rep. Abigail Spanberger is the projected winner over GOP challenger Yesli Vega.

Update: In Georgia governor's race, Gov. Brian Kemp leading Stacey Abrams 54%-45% with approximately 769,000 ballots remaining. 

GOP Senator John Kennedy has handily won re-election to the U.S. Senate from Louisiana.

Kristi Noem, South Dakota's GOP governor, easily wins re-election, NBC News reports. 

Update: In closely-watched Ohio senate race, GOP candidate J.D. Vance leading Democrat Tim Ryan 53%-46% with 61% of votes in, NBC News reports.  

Oklahoma's GOP governor, Kevin Stitt, projected to win re-election. 

GOP HOUSE PICK-UP ... NBC News says Republican Cory Mills has won the race for Florida's 7th District. That seat had been held by Democrat Stephanie Murphy.

In Florida's 2nd Congressional District, Republican Neal Dunn has defeated Democrat Al Lawson.

According to NBC News, incumbent Democrat Michael Bennet has been re-elected to the U.S. Senate.

NBC News: Colorado's Democrat governor, Jared Polis, projected to coast to re-election over GOP challenger Heidi Ganahl. 

Fox News projects Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will win third term, defeating Robert Francis "Beto" O'Rourke. 

In Alabama, voters have elected their first woman to represent them in the U.S. Senate: Republican Katie Britt.

Republican incumbent Maria Elvira Salazar re-elected to the U.S. House, representing Florida's 27th Congressional District.

Associated Press: Sarah Huckabee Sanders, former Trump press secretary, elected Arkansas governor. 

NBC News has called New Hampshire's gubernatorial race for the incumbent, Republican Chris Sununu. 

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio has won re-election -- as has Florida's Congressman Matt Gaetz (R).

In Georgia, Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has been re-elected.

Tenn. Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, has won re-election, Fox News projects. 

GOP HOUSE PICK-UP ... Projected winner, with 99% of vote in: GOP's Anna Paulina Luna in Florida's 13th Congressional District.

Fox News and AP project Florida's governor, Ron DeSantis, will defeat Democrat challenger Charlie Crist. 

Fox News: Florida's Marco Rubio (R) has retained his Senate seat.

AP report: Democrat Maxwell Alejandro Frost has become the first Gen Z member to win a seat in Congress, winning a Florida House seat.

AP has called the Senate race in Vermont for  Democrat Peter Welch -- who takes the seat vacated by retiring Senator Patrick Leahy.

CNN exit poll: Inflation matters vote to Republican voters; Democrats care most about abortion

In early election calls, Associated Press says Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) and Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) have won re-election.
