NYPD officers were called Monday to Manhattan’s Washington Square Park, where several hundred young men were engaged in a massive snowball fight. The mob then aimed its snowballs at the officers, too, sending several to the hospital with facial lacerations from injuries.
After reviewing footage of the incident, Mayor Zohran Mamdani called it a “snowball fight” even though the police officers didn’t pick up snowballs and playfully fight back. Instead, the police officers appear rather helpless as snowballs – and chunks of ice – rain down on their heads as they attempt to disengage.
Additional footage on social media, reviewed by AFN, shows a laughing mob chasing after officers who are seen walking to their police vehicles rather than confronting the mob.
Randy Sutton, a retired Las Vegas police lieutenant, told AFN the video footage shows the police officers were being assaulted by the mob, which is a serious crime.
“What you saw were police officers afraid to react in the manner to which they have been trained, and what would have been appropriate, which is defending themselves," said Sutton.
The most likely reason they were afraid to take action, Sutton added, is because of Mayor Mamdani and his anti-police stance.
The new mayor, who took office January 1, demonstrated his view of cops in recent weeks after police officers shot and wounded a man who charged at them with a large kitchen knife. After the mayor visited the attacker at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, he called for an attempted murder charge to be dropped, arguing the attacker deserves help for mental health issues rather a criminal prosecution.
More recently, Mamdani announced he has a plan to address the city's budget deficit: Reduce the police force by 5,000 new hires. That move comes after the mayor, who uses communist rhetoric such as collectivism, promised New York voters he would support the police department.
According to Sutton, Mayor Mamdani has “demonstrated” his true colors.
“Which are socialist red and cowardly yellow,” the retired police officer stated.
