Earlier this month, hours after he was fired, the former University of Michigan head football coach was arrested for third-degree home invasion, stalking in a domestic relationship, and breaking and entering.
The married father of three children had four years left on his $5.5 million/year contract, and the photo of him in custody (above) reflects the weight of losing everything.
Dr. Richard Land of Southern Evangelical Seminary is mindful of a famous quote from Pastor Vance Havner:
"Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay."
For every famous coach or politician or preacher whose fall hits the headlines, he says there are thousands of average Christian men and women who lose everything to sin.
"It starts with lust in your heart," Dr. Land warns, adding there is only one way for believers to inoculate their hearts and minds.
"If you start memorizing Scripture, when you get into temptation, the Holy Spirit will bring exactly the right verse to bear," he promises.
Those who live with and in sin without conviction from the Holy Spirit may just get away with it – but only this side of hell. According to Romans 6:23, "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
"If you continue the way you're going, and you are perfectly happy doing what you're doing, then you never were saved in the first place," Land states, remembering 1 John 2:19: "They went out from us because they never were part of us."
Moore reportedly attacked a former staffer after she broke off their years-long affair, threatening to kill himself in front of her for, in his words, ruining his life. He was released after posting a $25,000 bond and is scheduled to be back in court Jan. 22, 2026. He could face up to five years in prison for the felony charge.
Because he was terminated "for cause," Michigan may not be required to pay out the rest of his contract or any future salary and buyout funds Moore otherwise might have been owed.
